چکیده

Over the years, chemical market has shown significant growth, but hazardous impact of use and disposal on environment human health is a growing concern. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are among most dangerous chemicals with widespread effects living organisms, including humans. This study aimed to assess current status POP management regulatory infrastructure in Ethiopia by collecting information from stakeholders responsible for recording import, export, use, management, regulation POPs both government private sectors. Additionally, comprehensive literature review was conducted using Boolean operators international databases libraries. The results indicated that banned import pesticides listed under Annex A (i.e., those be eliminated), except endosulfan, which imported at quantity 199,767 kg lt -1 2011 2015. There 2,435 PCB-containing transformers Ethiopia, 2,242 (92%) currently use. These capacitors contain 1,031,661 1,255 dielectric fluids, respectively. As B restricted), there between 928,509 1,383,095 active obsolete dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane found different stores across country. approximately 337,000 products containing perfluorooctane sulfonic acid 2000 2020, an annual average 16,850 photographic film, paper, plates. were also detected environmental matrices (soil, waterbodies, sediments, food items, air) as well blood. Despite these findings, waste stockpiles largely inadequate Ethiopia. Therefore, it crucial improve monitoring, could achieved strengthening collaboration bodies, harmonizing fragmented laws control, building institutional capacity.

Persistent Organic Pollutants ("POPs")

Strictly speaking, all toxins entering the environment can be regarded as environmental poisons. Certain pollutants can, acting over long periods, harm living organisms even in low concentrations. This means that pollutants that are stable and thus persistent have a great ability to act as environmental poisons. Their stability means not only that their effects are long-lasting, but also that t...

Serum Persistent Organic Pollutants

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are manmade organic chemicals that remain in the environment for years or decades. POPs are of special concern because they often remain toxic for decades or longer after release to the environment. The more persistent a toxic chemical is, the greater the probability for human exposure over time. Because they circulate globally long after being released into...

Chapter 8 Persistent Organic Pollutants

The rapid growth in chemical and agrochemical industries during the last century have resulted in the environmental releases of a large number of new chemical compounds into the environment. According to the OECD, the daily use of chemicals includes about 70,000 mainly organic synthetic chemicals, and the number increases continuously (Schwarzenbach et al. 1993). Over the last decades, there ha...

Persistent organic pollutants in food supplies.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in various food supplies have important health impacts, but are not as devastating as malnutrition and, perhaps, obesity. POPs should be controlled and the Stockholm Convention is having an accelerating effect on the global decline of POP manufacture and use. Reservoirs from previous misuses are much larger than current manufacture and efforts should be dire...
